Hosiery looks simple on a shelf and behaves anything but simple on a knitting machine. One pair of socks or tights can combine a very fine nylon leg yarn, an elastic core, and a knit structure that stretches hundreds of times a day without going slack. When a mill asks why one style keeps its shape after twenty washes while another sags after five, the answer usually comes back to the same place: which nylon 6 DTY went into it, and how carefully that specification was chosen.

This article gathers the questions we go through most often when a hosiery customer is choosing a nylon 6 DTY.
Why Nylon 6 DTY Became the Workhorse of Hosiery
Draw textured yarn is made by false-twisting nylon 6 POY and then heat-setting the twist in place. The filament keeps a permanent helical crimp, so the finished yarn arrives bulky, stretchy and soft instead of flat and glassy. That is precisely the combination legwear needs: enough stretch to follow the leg, enough bulk to cover, and enough softness to sit against skin all day.
Compared with FDY, DTY gives the knitter more cover and more natural extension, which means a lighter yarn can do the same job. Compared with polyester DTY, nylon 6 feels softer, takes dye more deeply for rich black and navy shades, and recovers more readily after being stretched, an obvious advantage in a garment that is pulled on and off daily. Nylon also tolerates fine filament counts well, which is what makes 15D and 20D sheers possible in the first place.
Reading a Nylon 6 DTY Specification Sheet
Two DTY yarns can carry the same headline denier and behave completely differently on the machine. These are the values worth confirming before a sample is approved.
Yarn properties that decide comfort
- Linear density and filament count. A 40D/34F yarn is noticeably softer and more opaque than 40D/24F, because the same weight is spread across more, finer filaments. For sheers, filament count is often more important than denier alone.
- Tenacity and elongation at break. Higher tenacity helps fine yarns survive high-speed knitting and everyday abrasion. Balanced elongation keeps the loop structure from breaking during plating and covering.
- Crimp contraction and crimp stability. These two numbers predict how much bulk and stretch the yarn will deliver after finishing, and whether that stretch survives repeated washing.
- Intermingling level. NIM, SIM and HIM describe how many interlacing nodes per metre the yarn carries. Heavy intermingling holds filaments together through the needles; light intermingling keeps the yarn open and soft.
Processing properties that decide machine performance
- Oil pick-up (OPU). Too little finish and the yarn snags and generates static; too much and it stains needles and builds up on guides. Consistency between lots matters more than the absolute figure.
- Boiling water shrinkage. Shrinkage that is matched to your finishing route keeps stitch density stable and prevents the panel from tightening unpredictably after dyeing.
- Evenness and package build. A uniform package with clean tail transfer reduces stop marks, which are far more visible in fine-gauge hosiery than in heavier fabrics.

There is no single "best" DTY for hosiery. There is only the right grade for a given product, machine gauge and finishing route. The table below shows the windows we see most often in production, and it is a starting point for a trial rather than a fixed rule.

Choosing the Elastic Partner: Covered Yarn Decisions
Nylon 6 DTY rarely works alone in legwear. Almost every sock, tight and legging relies on a spandex core wrapped by nylon, and the way that core is covered changes how the finished garment behaves. Air covered yarn is softer, more open and better suited to knit structures where a low-profile elastic is wanted, such as fine sheers and dress socks. Single covered yarn gives firmer, more directional hold, which suits compression socks, cuffs and waistbands where a defined grip is the point.
Whichever route you take, the practical variables are the spandex denier, the draw ratio applied during covering, and the nylon outer layer denier. A 20D spandex core covered with 30D nylon behaves very differently from a 40D core with 70D nylon, even when both are described simply as "nylon spandex". Ask your supplier for the full construction, not just the yarn name.

- Buying on price per kilogram alone. A slightly cheaper yarn with lower crimp stability often costs more in seconds, rejects and returns than it saves on the invoice.
- Ignoring intermingling. The wrong node count shows up as filament breaks in the knitting zone or as visible streakiness after dyeing.
- Mixing lots without checking. Shade and shrinkage variation between batches is the most common cause of mismatched legs within one order.
- Overlooking storage and handling. Nylon absorbs moisture, and a package stored in a humid corner behaves differently from one taken straight from a conditioned warehouse.
- Specifying elongation that fights the machine. Every knitting machine has a comfortable working window; the yarn should be chosen to fit it rather than the other way around.
What a Reliable Nylon 6 DTY Supplier Should Be Able to Show
Once the specification is settled, the conversation shifts to consistency and delivery. A hosiery line that runs the same yarn every week notices small changes quickly, so it is worth asking a few direct questions before committing to volume.
Ask about total capacity and how it is structured, whether the supplier textures its own POY or buys on the open market, which certifications are held, and how quality data is recorded lot by lot. A Practical Sourcing Checklist
- Define the end product first: sheer, sock, sports or seamless, and the machine gauge it will run on.
- Fix denier and filament count from the product's opacity and softness targets, not from habit.
- Choose the intermingling level with your knitter, then keep it in the purchase specification.
- Request tenacity, elongation, crimp and shrinkage values in writing, with tolerances.
- Confirm oil pick-up and package weight against your creel and winding setup.
- Order a pilot lot and knit a full production run, not just a swatch, before the bulk order.
- Check dyeing behaviour and shade consistency across at least two lots.
- Agree storage conditions, lead time and batch traceability before signing.
Choosing nylon 6 DTY for hosiery is ultimately a matching exercise. The yarn has to suit the product, the machine and the finishing route at the same time, and the numbers on the spec sheet are the language for that conversation.
